Seven Steps For The Family

From Our Shield and Defender Devotional.

2 Kings 23:1-3;24

…And [Josiah] the king sent, and they gathered unto him all the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem. 2 And [Josiah] went up into the house of the LORD …and all the people, both small and great: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant which was found in the house of the LORD. 3 And [Josiah] stood by a pillar, and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all their heart and all their soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people stood to the covenant…
…And all the abominations that were spied in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem, did Josiah put away, that he might perform the words of the law which were written in the book that Hilkiah the priest found in the house of the LORD.

Certainly, most would agree that our society lacks something. However, if you were to ask an individual, “What is wrong with our society?” you would probably get an interesting response. Most people would look at you like you were crazy, say, “Nothin’s wrong!” and walk on. Others, would take you a bit more seriously and admit that they knew something is just not right, but would be unable to give you any specific reason. So the first question: Is there a problem existing in today’s society? If so, then what is it?

Allow me to propose that the problem within our nation is the lack of strong families and healthy homes. Skeptical? Consider a few statistics:
In 2012, the lifelong probability of a marriage ending in divorce is estimated to be 40%–50%.
29% of working adults access explicit websites on work computers.
The teen pregnancy rate in 2008 (most recent poll) stood at 70 per 1,000 women age 15-19.
67% of children admit to clearing their Internet history to hide their online activity.

From these examples, it is quite evident that there are more than a few problems plaguing our nation. However, as is always true, there is a solution to every problem. The solution to the lack of strong families in our nation can be summed up in one word: reformation.

How can we experience this in our families? Following are seven specific steps for your family, and then begin influencing others:

1) Men need to take responsibility and leadership.
Responsibility is a tough word. And it is an essential character trait that all men (especially husbands and father) need to possess. As men, we have the double duty of taking responsibility for our own actions, and also for leading our families in a Christ-like manner.

2) Ladies need to be keepers at home.
The role that women play in the home is crucial to reform. As a mother, it is your job to educate and train your children in the ways of God. Furthermore, you should assist your husband in his ministry (all families should have a ministry, but more on that later).

3) Children need to honor parents.
As a child, there are many ways that you can bring honor or dishonor to your parents. It is important to keep this principle in mind at all times. Too often, many children are guilty of bringing shame upon their parents. Do not break the Biblical admonition to honor your father and mother. Show respect for your parents’ authority, and be a good example to your siblings.

4) Boys must be taught how to become men.
There is an obvious lack if strong manly qualities in most young men today. Father’s you need to teach your boys to be manly and courageous. Teach them to be defenders of the helpless, not a predator upon the weak. Young men, learn to be leaders for the Lord. Our nation desperately needs strong, young leaders to stand for the principles of morality contained in the Word of God. Stand strong in the faith, even if it seems as if you stand alone.

5) Girls must learn to become ladies.
As with manliness in young men, there is also an extreme deficiency of femininity in young women today. Mothers, teach your girls to be ladylike and modest. Young ladies, as a young man myself, I can say that there are young men who sincerely appreciate and respect modesty and femininity as a most important virtue in girls’ character. Do not be discouraged in serving Jesus.

6) The Bible must become the ultimate authority.
It is absolutely necessary for reformation that the Bible become your ultimate authority by which you set your standards and govern your lifestyle. In the end, this is the one thing that matters. Christians must stand uncompromisingly upon biblical principles and justice. It does not matter what everyone else does, what does God’s Word say about _______ issue? Opinions are formed by infallible man, the Bible was written by the unerring hand of God. Make it your guide in this life!

7) Your family needs a ministry.
Saved families need to influence society. If we as Christians fail to be “salt and light” to the world, then the world will be influenced solely by the agents of Satan. Therefore, let your family become a unit that works together to influence society – politically, in the workplace, and even in your church – the opportunities are practically endless.

So in conclusion, let’s be determined to change our world for the glory of Jesus Christ. Simply observing or even lamenting the evils of society does no good. Do something positive and proactive. Don’t wait for evilness to rear its ugly head before you take a swing at it. Take the initiative and starve it at the roots. Do you see a need in society? Address it, fix it, do all in your power to change it. Even if it seems insignificant, the truth is that small things multiply into major areas of life. Everyday things do make the most difference!

We need families working together. Start in your family – what is your family’s ministry?

2 Kings 23:25
25 And like unto [Josiah] was there no king before him, that turned to the LORD with all his heart, and with all his soul, and with all his might, according to all the law of Moses; neither after him arose there any like him.
