Dear Mr. Garcia,
Thank you for your letter regarding a Balanced Budget Amendment (BBA) to the U.S. Constitution. I appreciate this opportunity to correspond with you.
As you know, H.J.Res . 2 was introduced by Congressman Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) on January 3, 2013. This bill would not allow the government to spend more in a fiscal year than it takes in for that year. Spending could only be increased if three-fifths of both the House of Representatives and the Senate vote to allow it. Similarly, the statutory debt limit, commonly known as the debt ceiling, would only be raised if three-fifths of both the House and Senate vote in favor of increasing it. You may be interested to know that I am a cosponsor of the bill .
Our government must start to operate within its means, and a BBA would go a long way in keeping government spending under control. Please be assured I will continue to fight to stop the unprecedented growth in the federal debt and restore fiscal discipline.
Thank you again for sharing your thoughts with me. Please contact my office if I can be of assistance in the future.
